What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is more commonly referred to as counseling, talk therapy, or therapy. Therapy can help provide the opportunity for healing and deep personal growth through various therapeutic approaches based on your individual needs and preferences.

How Does Therapy Work?

Therapy is the relationship between therapist and client(s) whereby they engage on a journey of exploration together to discover and resolve distress in the client’s life. The therapist utilizes many techniques to help develop awareness and insight in the client, in order to build and maintain the skills necessary for a healthy and happy lifestyle.

What Kind of Concerns and Issues Are Addressed in Therapy?

Many different concerns and issues can be addressed in therapy. Some examples are helping one discover new or alternative ways in his or her thinking, resulting in more positive outcomes; exploring ways of modifying behaviors to increase social development and strengthen relationships; and learning how to cope with and handle powerful emotions, such as depression, anxiety, fear, or grief. Therapy can help you gain awareness of these concerns and issues, explore them in a safe and nonjudgmental environment, and develop strategies on how to achieve personal goals.

What Can I Discuss in Therapy?

Literally anything can be discussed in therapy. If it is important to you, then you should feel free to express yourself. You and your therapist process what you share in session in order to help identify areas in your life to introduce interventions that can instill

positive change.

Is Therapy Confidential?

The confidentiality of all communications between a client and a therapist is protected by law. Aside from certain specific situations, a therapist cannot tell anyone what you have discussed in therapy or even that you are in therapy without your permission.

How Long Does It Take Before I See Results From Therapy?

There is no specified amount of time for therapy. We spend a significant portion of our lives developing into the people we are, oftentimes over the course of several years, if not decades. As such, there is no definitive time span before one begins to see results from therapy. However, typically people report having noticeable changes within a few weeks and experience deeper, more meaningful changes within a few months.

How Do I Begin Therapy?

Feel free to schedule an appointment by completing our contact form or giving us a call. You may download the intake packet on our website or pick it up in person at our office. All pages of the intake packet must be completed prior to your initial consultation.

What Can I Expect If I Begin Therapy?

The first session will be an introduction to one another (client and therapist). You and your therapist will review your history and discuss what challenges you are experiencing in your life. Together, you and your therapist will set goals for treatment based upon the changes you would like to see and experience in your life. Successive sessions will deepen and strengthen the relationship between you and your therapist, and will seek to instill awareness of your challenges and the skills and confidence to overcome them.

Who Benefits From Therapy?

Most people can gain some benefit from therapy. Many find great benefit from having a therapist help guide them with exploring their concerns and issues in a safe environment while developing the skills to express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in appropriate ways.

What Is the Role of Our Therapists?

Our therapists foster relationships with their clients, where the client and the therapist collaborate by jointly taking on the role of an expert and a partner. The therapist is the expert in creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment, where the client can feel free and comfortable to explore and express themselves. The client is the expert in their own lives, experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Together, the client and therapist work collaboratively to create a path forward toward healing and growth as equal partners.

How Long Is a Therapy Session?

A typical individual, couples, and family therapy session is 55 minutes. Group therapy sessions span 60-90 minutes.

Does Therapy Work for Everyone?

No, there are instances where therapy does not work.  However, our therapists work with you on your goals and maintain caring and open relationships to ensure that you have the opportunity to gain the maximum benefit from your experience.
